New walking trails showcasing the colourful past of Hounslow Heath and its many wildlife inhabitants are being launched this Saturday, 21 October, from 11am to 3pm.

Residents of all ages can head to the Showmans Ground, near Staines Road entrance, TW4 5AR and follow the History Hike, which highlights characters and events that shaped the Heath’s past.

At one point, it was considered one of the most dangerous places in the 17th and 18th centuries when highway men and bandits stalked the area. There is also the story of how Hounslow Heath’s former aerodrome witnessed the first long distance flight to Australia.

Alongside that, is the Wild Walk, which will reveal that Heath is home to some rare wildlife including Muntjac deer, water voles, newts and kestrels amongst others.

Several wooden markers placed across the Heath, will feature images and facts and there will be detailed maps so visitors can walk and discover.

The trails have been created by Hounslow Council in partnership with Friends of the River Crane Environment, Green Gym, Nature Links, Intelligent Health and One You Hounslow.

Running alongside the new trails is the Beat the Street initiative, which will allow residents who are among the 25,000 people currently taking part in the activity challenge, a chance to boost their points, by being able to tap into a one-off 50-point beat box.

Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Green Policy and Leisure, Hounslow Council, said: “This is a very exciting venture for residents of all ages to enjoy. Families can trace the very interesting history of Hounslow Heath and at the same time, explore the fantastic wildlife that has made the Heath its home.

“It is also a good chance to get out there walking and be active. If anyone is currently clocking up the miles for Beat the Street, then this is a great opportunity to get those bonus points!”
