The London Borough of Hounslow declared a climate emergency in 2019. We are taking urgent action to help achieve zero carbon status as soon as possible, including consulting on a draft strategy for electric vehicles.

Although the council is prioritising the delivery of projects that encourage more trips on foot, by bike or public transport, as part of its wider transport strategies, we  recognise that this is not possible for every journey. It is therefore important that the council delivers the infrastructure that is necessary to support the increase in cleaner vehicles.

Electric vehicles (EVs) can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality as they do not emit pollutants such as  Nitrogen Dioxide. The borough of Hounslow has  declared itself an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) -  meaning we are legally required to implement improvement measures.

All new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans are due to be banned from sale by 2030. This  requires local authorities to make plans now for the infrastructure that will be needed to support the transition to EVs. We are seeking the views of residents and businesses about that infrastructure.

The council has produced a draft Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (EVI) strategy. It sets out how the council will manage the installation of 2,000 additional charge points  by May 2026. It details the type of charging points, their proposed distribution across the borough and any necessary supporting measures.

The council is committed to actively engaging with as much of the community and as many key stakeholders as possible to ensure this strategy meets the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors. Whether you are already an EV driver, are thinking about upgrading, or are interested for other reasons, we are keen to hear your thoughts.

There’s more information about Electric Vehicles, and our draft strategy, on our website here

How you can get involved Your views are vital to help us produce a strategy and then put it into action across  the Borough. We want everyone who lives, works and studies in the area to have their say.

You can  provide your feedback by visiting the online survey  here

Please provide feedback by Sunday 11 September 2022.

What happens after the consultation process?

We will look at all the responses to the survey and use this information to take our EV strategy forward.  A consultation report with recommendations will then go to the council’s Cabinet meeting. We will then publish a decision notice on our website, with details of the next steps and any further engagement.
