Families in the borough can get their children’s car seats checked for FREE this month as Hounslow Council host another children’s car seat clinic.

The Council’s Road Safety team will be on hand at the following session:

  • Monday 17 July, Alexandra Road car park, Hounslow, TW3 1LX, 12noon to 6pm.

At car seat clinic’s held in May and June, 192 seats belonging to local residents were checked, with 79 per cent of those found to be fitted incorrectly.

During this FREE event, the team carry out checks on the seats and correct any problems. The team will also give out advice on the new law changes which came into force in March this year, on travelling with children in the car.

Currently, children weighing 15kgs [2st 5lbs] - which can include children as young as 3-4 years - can use a booster cushion [or backless booster seat]. But booster cushions made from 1 March 2017, are only be approved for older children that are 125cm tall or weigh 22kg and above [over 3st].

The change will not affect existing models which will still be legal to use, but safety experts are recommending a high-backed booster seat is more suitable as it offers more protection to the head and chest in the event of a collision.

Councillor Hanif Khan, Cabinet Member for Community Protection and Enforcement, Hounslow Council, said:

“Even if you have recently had your child’s car seat checked, if you can get to the session, do so and get it tested again. It is free to go along and any questions you have around car seats can be answered by our road safety teams.

“Safety is paramount and we want to give families in our borough the opportunity to get these type of checks done for free and have peace of mind.”
