Hounslow Council is set to become the first local authority in London to offer every household in the borough a £20 voucher to spend in local participating businesses.
Over 200 businesses have eagerly joined the initiative which will help support the local economy recover from the impacts of COVID-19, by encouraging ‘’in-person’ spending rather than online.
It is hoped the initiative will bring residents back into local shopping areas, helping them provide the extra customer demand necessary to protect and retain jobs.
Cllr Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “This ambitious initiative is designed to give a much-needed boost to shops and businesses in Hounslow.
“Our communities have faced challenging times in the past 18 months, and we want to do everything possible to uplift our residents and business owners.
“Every household will have the opportunity to explore our fantastic range of shops and venues.
“By shopping locally, we can all do our bit to help Hounslow recover from the pandemic and foster a longer-term culture of supporting our high streets keeping the pound in Hounslow.”
Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services added:
“Businesses in Hounslow contribute so much towards the vibrant, diverse borough we love.
“We are proud of how our businesses responded to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions with immense resilience and flexibility. Now we want to support them in every way possible to rebuild.
“The ShopLocal voucher provides an innovative way of encouraging a return to the highstreets and injecting cash into the local economy.
“By shopping local you are supporting the heart of our local communities, saving independent businesses and jobs.”
The voucher initiative is designed to encourage spending at retailers that have been badly affected by lockdown restrictions and stimulate spending in our town centres and local shopping parades during the autumn and winter, when footfall often decreases.
Partnering with Evouchers, the Hounslow Council ShopLocal voucher will be an opportunity for businesses to raise their profile by inspiring residents to explore some of the borough’s hidden gems, developing new customer bases, and increasing future spending.
Households will receive a unique individual code via the post towards the end of August and will have until 7 December 2021 to spend the voucher on products or services at a range of businesses including cafes, cinemas, restaurants, health and wellbeing organisations, laundrettes and many more.
Local businesses can still apply to join the initiative for free by visiting www.retailers.evouchers.com/.
Participating businesses will receive free promotion from the Council and be included on an interactive map to help residents establish where they can spend the voucher. The interactive map can be found by visiting retailers.evouchers.com/hounslow.
