London Road Safety Council its a jungle out there

With just weeks to go before pupils start secondary school, a London-wide campaign aims to reduce road-related injuries and deaths on the Capital’s busy networks.

Hounslow Council has partnered with the London Road Safety Council (LRSC) in a bid to help keep children safe on our roads this autumn.

Parents are being encouraged to take their children through the advice provided, especially as lockdown has reduced their exposure to busy roads.

‘It’s a Jungle Out There!’ campaign targets children transitioning to secondary school, in an effort to reduce the risk of death or serious injury while travelling to school.

Cllr Hanif Khan, Cabinet Member for Transport and One Hounslow, said: “Empowering and informing our younger residents of the dangers of the roads for first-time commuters is essential. Even one accident on our streets is too many.

“We want to ensure our young people feel safe and confident to make sustainable and active travel choices when making their journeys to school.

“By easing the anxiety about the ‘solo school run’ for parents and getting them and their children clued-up, we’ll all be able to help in reducing the rate of preventable accidents on our roads.”

Research by Public Health England, in 2016, found that the main causes of premature death among children and young people aged 0-15, were as a result of road collisions. Approximately 35 per cent of incidents involving child pedestrians (where they were killed or seriously injured) occurred during what is typically classified as the ‘school run’.

In the last year, Hounslow had 22 pedestrian casualties for the 0-15 age group, with six of them being serious incidents and the rest classified as slight incidents.

To keep these numbers low and aim to reduce them to zero, the Council is urging parents and guardians to speak to children about keeping safe amidst growing concern that the pandemic has impacted young peoples’ exposure to ‘road risks’ – with lockdown resulting in home-schooling for many, and fewer cars on the roads.

The ‘It’s a Jungle Out There’ campaign will provide families across London with a range of useful resources for both parents and children. The campaign will also run in 11 other London boroughs, to help reduce preventable road accidents.
