Statement on secondary schools staggered return in January 2021

Statement from Councillor Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Youth Services

Cllr Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Children’s Services,

"We understand the reasoning for Government saying secondary schools will ‘stagger’ their return in January, but this is the third of a recent set of short-notice announcements from Government. Those started with the one-day early closure announcement last week, then mass testing in schools, and now this just before the Christmas break.

"This announcement has not come with any real guidance as to what Government wants or expects. Headteachers and school staff have already had an incredibly difficult and exhausting year, and are understandably frustrated, especially as this is right at the end of term. It is shocking, but not surprising, as this government continues to lurch from one panicked and ill-thought-out announcement to another.

"We are working to get clarity for headteachers as quickly as possible from the Department for Education and we are continuing to work with schools to make sense of this for them, parents and pupils.”
