The government recently announced Heathrow Airport as its preferred scheme for a new runway in the southeast and has today (2 February 2017) launched its public consultation on a draft National Policy Statement (NPS). This NPS sets out the policy that applies to decisions on whether major infrastructure projects can go ahead.
The consultation launch today is a vital step towards a final decision on Heathrow and will take place over 16 weeks. It includes a number of local events for people to find out more about the proposals – and importantly, to have their say.
In Hounslow Council’s recent residents’ survey, residents were asked questions about council services, but also for their views on the proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport. Residents and businesses now have the opportunity to let government have their views on the proposals.
Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council said today:
Our position on Heathrow Airport remains, as it has always been, that we’d like to see a better not bigger airport. The government’s recommended expansion at Heathrow will have a huge impact on the residents and businesses of Hounslow, with noise, pollution and additional congestion our main concerns.
The Department of Transport’s launch today of its consultation on a new northwest runway is an important step towards a final decision and I strongly urge all Hounslow residents and businesses to take part and make sure they have their say.
There are consultation events taking place in every local authority bordering the airport, with two events here in Hounslow:
- Monday 27 February, from 11am to 8pm at the Civic Centre, Lampton Road, Hounslow and
- Wednesday 15 March, from 11am to 8pm at Isleworth Public Hall.
“The Department of Transport is providing background information, ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ and consultation response forms on their website. Leaflets are also being posted through letterboxes in Hounslow.
“Do please have a look at this information and put the Hounslow consultation event dates in your diaries – the consultations are open to everyone”.
