Signs have gone up in and around Space Waye, the borough’s re-use and recycling site, to alert residents about its upcoming temporary closure.

Space Waye will be closed from Monday 3 October to Friday 4 November to allow the site to be changed so it can house the borough’s household recycling while a new depot is built at Southall Lane.

The decision to temporarily close Space Waye comes about following a delay to the new Materials Handling Facility under way at Southall Lane, which is due to open in mid-2017.

The closure will allow the site to be remodelled to accommodate the borough’s new recycling vehicles.

Once Space Waye reopens, on Saturday 5 November, it will only be available to the general public on weekends for health and safety reasons.

Weekend opening hours for residents will be extended once Space Waye reopens:

  • Saturdays 8am-6pm
  • Sundays 8am-6pm

Those paying to use the site to deposit trade waste will only be able to use it Monday to Friday.

Councillor Amrit Mann, Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “As well as signs at Space Waye, staff have been handing out flyers to visitors to alert them to the upcoming changes and direct them to alternative sites.

“Posters will be going up around the borough this month and we will be notifying residents with wheelie bins about the changes by placing a hanger with information on their bin. There’s also detailed information in Hounslow Matters, out this month.

“We’re trying to cover all bases to minimise any disruption to residents while we close the site, so we can modify it to enable us to store the borough’s recycling there.

“I appreciate that these changes will cause inconvenience for some residents. But they are absolutely essential and mark the first step in a raft of changes to recycling and waste services which will see us increase how much we recycle, plus reduce waste sent to harmful and increasingly expensive landfill sites.

“I ask residents to please bear with us during this important time.”

While Space Waye is closed, residents can use alternative sites within the West London Waste Authority Area. Use of these sites is free when showing proof of address (Council Tax bill or recently dated utility bill) and proof of ID.

The nearest sites for Hounslow residents are:

  • Townmead Road Reuse and Recycling Centre, Townmead Road, Kew, TW9 4EL
  • Greenford Road Re-use and Recycling Centre, Greenford, UB6 9AP.

Charges may apply when using other sites.
