Recycle Week starts today. Together – Hounslow Recycles!

The theme for Recycle Now’s 17th annual Recycle Week is to thank the people of Hounslow for continuing to recycle despite all that has happened this year.

Statistics released by Recycle Now show that through lockdown the UK has become even more environmentally aware, with nearly 9 in 10 households saying they ‘regularly recycle’.  Coming out of lockdown, more people are prepared to change their lifestyles to help the environment: 73 per cent, up from 68 per cent in 2019. And an amazing 93 per cent of UK households say they believe that ‘everyone has a responsibility to help towards cleaning up the environment’.

The figures come from research carried out during lockdown and an omnibus survey completed in July.

Cllr Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Trading Companies said:

“We are all delighted to see such a marked increase in enthusiasm for recycling and there has been progress across Hounslow over the pandemic, but we still have room for improvement, both in what the council offers and what residents do to play their part.  We are working to enable everyone across the borough to waste less and recycle more and are systematically and gradually refreshing recycling facilities for residents of blocks of flats as well as extending our food waste recycling service to these residents as we know that most of you really want to do the right thing.

“Helped by our outstanding recycling and waste team at Lampton Recycle 360 who have done an excellent job Hounslow have delivered uninterrupted services throughout the pandemic, unlike many councils which changed or suspended services. We are very grateful for the hard work and resilience of the Lampton crews and their entire operation.

“We hope that this Recycling Week many of you will engage with us on social media to tell their stories and share hints and tips on what works for you. Together – we can build on our successes and do even better next year!”

Peter Maddox, Director, WRAP UK, said:

“It’s fantastic to see that despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in Hounslow are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle. This is something we can all do, wherever we live – an individual action that, when performed by everyone, adds up to a huge change.

“Lampton Recycle 360’s recycling and waste workers have been real heroes too, providing the best service possible under the most difficult of circumstances. The recognition they received in the form of friendly waves, notes, cards and gifts left out for them is heart-warming proof of how Hounslow has cooperated.

“Recycle Week this year is an opportunity to thank everyone in Hounslow for continuing to recycle, whatever their circumstances and to celebrate the way we have all pulled together. There has been a positive leap forward in attitudes that we must capitalise on so Hounslow can do even better in the coming year!”

Hounslow Council, businesses and other organisations across Hounslow are fully supporting Recycle Week as a great opportunity to highlight the importance of recycling. Everyone – organisations and individuals - can support Recycle Week by using #RecycleWeek on social media.
