My week by Cllr. Steve Curran 2020

25 - 29 May

Hi everyone,

As the warm weather continued again over the last bank holiday weekend, I would like to thank everyone for following the Government’s guidance: stay alert, control the virus, save lives.

On Saturday, I visited the mobile coronavirus test centre at the Grasshoppers’ Rugby Club grounds in Osterley. Testing was available over Saturday and Sunday for NHS staff and members of the public who met the criteria for pre-booked appointments.

Many thanks to Grasshoppers RFC for their continued support in hosting the testing centres and providing volunteers to manage the site. It’s another good example of the community coming together in supporting each other during the crisis.

Social distancing with Leader of the Council

The Government’s announcement to reopen retail businesses from Monday 15 June will be welcome news to many businesses and residents, however we all must be cautious as we mustn’t trigger another spike in infections. I know businesses will want to do everything they can to open safely to protect their staff and customers. The Council is ready and will be there to support businesses, we are working very closely with the Hounslow Chamber of Commerce to ensure the successful reopening of businesses. It’s imperative that people shop locally in our high streets and shopping parades, this is obviously good for business, good for the environment and avoids the need to use public transport or the car. You may be interested to know that Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Lead Member for Finance & Corporate Property, has written to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP. You can read his letter here.

On Tuesday, I hosted my first Live Q&A event. It was a great to have the opportunity to be able to respond to questions from residents, some of which were challenging. The feedback I have received from those who joined has been positive and there was a general feeling from the people who emailed me afterwards that we should do more of these events. So, this is something I will be talking to my Cabinet colleagues about, I’m certainly looking forward to my next live event! If you were unlucky enough to have missed the Q&A, you can watch it here

On Wednesday, I was in my regular hotseat with Chiswick Buzz TV, being interviewed by Lorna Ko. You can watch it here.

On Thursday morning, I was delighted to join the Business Task Force panel, a weekly webinar organised by Hounslow Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Chiswick Buzz TV, along with many other events. The Business Task Force takes place every Thursday at 10 am, with a star-studded panel line up. I would like to thank Hounslow Chamber of Commerce for their continued support of business in the borough, particularly to small and medium enterprises, their help is much appreciated.
