The impact of violence on women and girls has far reaching consequences for families, children, communities and society as a whole. Violence against women and girls is both a form of discrimination and a violation of human rights.

Protecting women from violence and enabling them to protect themselves, either through the criminal justice system and through increased safety measures, gives women greater capacity to protect their children.
