South Chiswick Liveable Neighbourhood - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Did you consider a southbound restriction on Hartington Road?

Hartington Road is one of the busiest residential streets in the area, with just under 8,000 vehicles on the average weekday, using the section between the A316 and Cavendish Road. Of this traffic, 65% is heading in a northbound direction. Unlike many roads which experience a “tidal flow” of traffic in the morning and afternoon, Hartington Road is significantly busier in a northbound direction in both the morning and afternoon peak period (76% and 69% of all traffic at these times is northbound).

Grove Park Bridge experiences an even higher volume of traffic with over 8,000 vehicles on the average weekday. Again, two thirds of this is northbound, which is the predominant movement in both the morning and afternoon. The data also shows that of all the traffic entering Hartington Road from the A316, over 7 in 10 vehicles are through traffic, which passes through the area without stopping. Nearly 60% of this traffic exits the zone via Grove Park Bridge.

This heavy northbound traffic movement is a key issue that the Hartington Road northbound restriction looks to address initially. Southbound access on Hartington Road is proposed to be unrestricted for all vehicles during the trial. Collected data on traffic volumes will form a key part of analysis for the trial.
