My Week by Cllr. Steve Curran 2018

3 - 7 December

I came back from a short break to Spain on Saturday - the weather was lovely, and it was great to recharge the batteries.

Thank you to Deputy Leader Cllr Lily Bath for holding the fort while I was away. I understand she did a great job and she told me there was a very lively Cabinet Question Time event in Feltham with many residents in attendance. Most of the discussions focused on planning, which is understandable as there are major developments planned for Feltham over the next few years. I’d like to thank Mike Foston the community representative who kindly chaired the event for us - thanks Mike!

Over the weekend I was invited to Hanworth Park House for the ‘Community Christmas’ event. It was great to meet with local residents and even father Christmas made an appearance! We’re working very hard with Richard Griffiths, chairman of Friends of Hanworth Park House, Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor of Planning, Regeneration and Skills, and the community to try to reach a solution that will ensure the future of the park and house which we know is greatly valued by the community.

This week, we’re supporting the ‘Blooming Strong’ campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. I’m delighted that Hounslow is one of just six London Boroughs to be awarded the ‘White Ribbon Town’ status for our continued commitment to ending such violence. The White Ribbon Campaign was set up over a decade ago by a group of men who wanted to send out a strong, collective message that there needs to be zero tolerance for violence against women. A job well done by staff who have pulled together a great set of materials for the stand currently located in the reception area of the Civic Centre.

On to the highlights of my week - I hope you like the new format!

It was good to meet with PC Joe Kettle, who is one of our estate police officers, for a patrol of the borough. We went to Charlton House, Brentford, in the Syon ward, where concerns have been raised by residents about anti-social behaviour in the area. Our Estate Police Officers do a great job to keep residents safe.

I also met with Mark Devlin who is stepping down from his role as Chief Executive of Brentford Football Club. Mark has served a terrific seven years at Brentford FC and has done so much to support the club with their new ground development. I wish him well for the future.

Later in the week, I attended the London Councils’ Leaders Committee where we were joined by Cressida Dick, Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, to discuss the new Violent Crime Task Force introduced by the Mayor of London. We also discussed the recent rise in moped crime as seen in the news, and the introduction of the Borough Command Units (BCU). Our BCU consists of Hounslow, Ealing, and Hillingdon which delivers the same core local policing functions but in a more consistent way across the capital.

I was invited to the High Street Quarter site by Barratt London to see how the development is going. Building works are currently underway to transform the town centre for the benefit of the community and will include a cinema, a range of shops and much needed homes for local people, of which 41 per cent of which will be affordable. The entire project is set to be complete by 2021 and I’m very much looking forward to it!

As always, Good luck to the Bee’s, who will be up against Swansea tomorrow. Let’s hope they pull a good game out of the bag!

Have a great weekend all.
