My Week by Cllr. Steve Curran - 2018

18 – 22 June

You may already know the Leader has been away this week undergoing hip replacement surgery, so I’ve been holding the reins in his absence. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return.

As Deputy Leader, I’m excited about my housing responsibilities and recognise the challenging issues that come with it. A few highlights from my week include a meeting with Peter Matthew, Strategic Director of Housing, Planning and Communities, and other senior officers to discuss some of the housing challenges we face. There is a lot of work in progress so watch this space!

I also learned that the Hounslow Housing team are shortlisted for the Housing Heroes’ ‘Development or Maintenance Team of the Year’ award. This was the same team that were on the front line dealing with Hounslow residents post-Grenfell, ensuring safety needs were met, and made us the first council in the country to remove defective cladding from a building. Winners will be announced on Monday 25 June at an awards ceremony in Manchester. Wishing the best of luck to the team!

Coincidently, a Fire Safety and Estate Improvement Programme report I have been working on was published this week and will be presented at Borough Council. The report provides an update on what we have done in Hounslow following the awful tragedy in Grenfell. We want to continue to ensure our residents are safe and feel protected in their homes.

This week also marks the one year anniversary of the Finsbury Park attack. We held a minute’s silence across the council on Tuesday, remembering the victims, their families and friends.

Looking to the future, this week the cabinet approved a refreshed Future Borough Strategy which was initially introduced in 2011, and sets out the identity and long-term vision for the borough, challenges to achieving this vision, objectives and priorities.

And finally, I met with some of the councillors from Feltham North to look at ways they can engage with the local community. We want to continue to ensure Hounslow is a great place to live, work and visit for all.
