Air quality and aviation noise

Air quality monitoring

Within Hounslow, six automatic air quality monitoring stations measure NOx and PM10 at regular intervals throughout the day. Additionally, stations in Brentford and Chiswick measure PM2.5.

Breathe London have a network of automatic sensors across London that monitor NO2 and PM2.5.

Hounslow also have a network of over 170 diffusion tubes across the borough. These tubes measure the average monthly concentration of NO2. Each month, Air Quality Officers replace these tubes and send them to a laboratory for analysis.

Air quality

We are committed to improving air quality in the borough.

We regularly review and monitor the quality of air in the borough because of its poor levels.

Factors that influence the quality of air:

  • Fossil fuels used by cars and lorries;
  • Aircraft fuel being close to an international airport;
  • Gases carried out by factory chimneys and power stations;
  • Gas and oil fired central heating boilers, and
  • Open fires and bonfires.
