Recycling in schools

Food waste recycling

We have recently introduced a free food waste recycling service available to all Schools in the Borough. As part of an initiative to dispel the myth that food waste recycling is dirty and smells we are the first Borough to offer a bin swapping service as part of our food waste collection.

A full 240L bin is swapped weekly with a clean 240L bin, the full bin is then taken to our transport avenue site where it goes through a bin wash (similar to a dishwasher) ready to be swapped again.

How does Food Waste Recycling work in Schools?

  • We deliver a free 240L wheeled bin to your school, and if requested some small food waste caddies for around the school, lunch hall and staff room.
  • You fill up these smaller caddies with unavoidable food waste (tea bags, fruit peelings, plate scraping etc) and then empty this into the 240L bin.
  • We carry out weekly collections of food waste from each school from your designated bin area. We will only collect from the 240L bin.
  • The full bin gets taken away and, in its place, a new clean bin is left for the following week.

If you do not currently have a food waste service and interested in having this, please email recycling@hounslow.gov.uk with the name of the school, a contact name and an email address.
