Extra polio vaccine dose for children (London only)

Children aged 1 to 9 years old in London are being offered a dose of polio vaccine.

There are signs the virus is spreading in London and the number of children vaccinated in London is lower than it should be.

Boosting immunity in children should help protect them and reduce the risk of the virus continuing to spread.

Who can get an extra polio vaccine dose?

Children aged 1 to 9 years old can get an extra polio vaccine dose if they either:

  • live in London
  • are registered with a GP surgery in London
  • For some children this may be an extra dose on top of their routine vaccinations. In other children it may bring them up to date with their routine vaccinations.

If your child has recently had a polio vaccine:

If your child has recently had a routine vaccine that protects against polio, they may not need an extra dose straight away.

  • Children who've had the 6-in-1 vaccine (usually given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks old) should wait 4 weeks from their most recent dose before having an extra dose of polio vaccine.
  • Children who've had the 4-in-1 pre-school booster (usually given at 3 years and 4 months old) only need an extra dose of polio vaccine if it's been 12 months or more since they had the booster.
