Emergencies and disasters can happen at any time, from fires to flooding, from toxic leaks to explosions, and from aircraft crashes to severe weather.
They can result in the loss of basic services including water, electricity and gas, and telephones. They can also result in damage or threat of damage to homes and businesses by flooding, fire or explosions. Evacuation from homes and businesses may be needed or, conversely, people may be required to remain indoors for an extended period of time.
Emergency planning
Emergency planning is the general term for the work that the government, the emergency services, the health services and the council all do in preparing plans and procedures for dealing with any emergency that might affect large numbers of people. All of the relevant organisations work together to ensure that any emergency response would be co-ordinated, that staff are trained and that practice exercises to test the plans and procedures are carried out.
Hounslow also works with other agencies on plans for the north west area of London. The Local Resilience Forum was established to promote the assessment of risks and information sharing between all those organisations who may become involved in an incident.
We also assist the plans for London-wide emergencies. This work has been ongoing since 2001 and many plans have already been published and tested.
