School governing bodies are responsible for ensuring a good quality education is provided for every child in their school.
The governing body is a key part of the school leadership team. Although the headteacher is responsible for the day to day management of the school, the governing body is responsible for strategic planning and policy development, monitoring the impact of school plans and policies and being accountable for what happens.
Governing bodies should have a strong focus on these five main roles:
Ensure that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined
Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
Ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school's financial resources
Ensure leadership complies with statutory regulations
Parents and school staff have representatives on the governing body, and there are also positions for people from the local community. School governing bodies are made up of people from all walks of life who volunteer to work with schools in their spare time.
Governing bodies make important decisions about school priorities and development and help shape the future of the school. Hounslow is a richly diverse community and the local authority would like to encourage people from all backgrounds to get involved and play a part in helping our schools succeed.
There are vacancies for governors in many Hounslow schools. If you want to know more about becoming a governor, please see further information on this website.
