Nursery schools

In our primary schools, children can take up a free, part-time place in a nursery class in the September after a child’s third birthday.

Children born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 can be admitted to a nursery class attached to a primary school in September 2012.

The September 2012 starting nursery class in a school brochure and applications forms are available from the schools and this web page.

Children born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 can apply for a nursery school place directly by contacting the schools. Alternatively you can download the nursery class application form, available on this page under documents for download, print and complete.

Once the form has been completed, it can be handed directly to the school you are applying to.

Children are able to attend school nursery classes for five half days each week during term time, either five mornings or five afternoons, depending on the organisation of each school.

Please note: education in a school nursery is not complusory and the places available are a benefit to residents in the borough. It may not be possible for every parent to secure a place in a school nursery for their child.

Indeed. some parents who are already using childcare such as a private day nursery or playgroup, may prefer to keep their child in the provision where hey are settled, until the child starts reception year, the following September.

There is government funding available which entitles three and four year olds to 15 hours of early education, either at a school nursery or with a private provider, such as a private day nursery or a pre-school playgroup.

This is known as the Early Education Entitlement, available on this page under documents for download.
