Protecting vulnerable adults
Many adults rely on other people because of their age, disability, illness or frailty to assist them in their day to day living. Vulnerable adults may be at risk in their own home, in residential or nursing care, in day care or in hospital - often from people they know such as a relative, friend or neighbour or a paid carer.
Every adult has the right to:
live a life free from fear
be treated with dignity
have their choices respected and not forced to do anything against their will
If you are concerned for yourself or someone else
Anyone who thinks that an adult is at risk from abuse or neglect should let us know. If you feel immediate action is needed contact the police or emergency services on 999.
If you suspect ill treatment of an adult:
call our hotline on 020 8583 4515
call the police community safety unit on 020 8721 9104
You do not need to give your name but we may need to act on the information you give us and contact other relevant services.
Please act promptly if you suspect abuse, as it can be very difficult to investigate concerns if there is a delay - some signs of abuse can disappear quite quickly.
If you are unsure you may first like to discuss your concerns with someone you know who works with adults such as a social worker, general practitioner, or a health visitor.
Our offices are open Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4.45pm. In the event of an emergency outside of these hours, please call 020 8583 2222 or the emergency services.
Types of abuse
Abuse can take many forms such as shouting and swearing, hitting, pushing, unwanted touching, kissing or sexual intercourse. The denial of privacy, social contact, choice or not being cared for properly. It may involve the taking of money or property without consent or under pressure.
The different types of abuse include:
Violence
Bullying
Financial
Sexual
Neglect
Discrimination
This should not happen to you. You have the right to report this to someone and for this to stop.
Who to talk to
It is important to tell someone you trust, not the person who is abusing or hurting you. You could tell a family member, key worker, doctor, friend, care manager, social worker. You can write a letter to a social worker or telephone, or ask someone to do it for you.
