Whenever works are carried out on or close to roads, it may be necessary to consider the introduction of temporary traffic management arrangements such as road closures, banned turns and temporary parking restrictions, for the duration of the work.
To enforce restrictions we may make a temporary traffic management order (known as a TTMO). A TTMO can last for just a few hours or up to 18 months depending on the nature of the work.
The majority of TTMOs are either to close a road to traffic or to restrict parking. Details of all current TTMOs issued by us can be viewed on this page.
Sometimes special events will also require a TTMO. If you are looking to organise a special event, contact us as soon as possible to discuss traffic management arrangements.
For information on closing a road for a street party, see our road closures for special events page.
Applying for a TTMO
If you are a contractor requiring a temporary traffic management order (TTMO), follow the procedure below.
We will only bring a restriction into force without delay in exceptional circumstances, such as, where there is a danger to the public, or because of serious damage to the road.
TTMOs or notices may be issued for:
Road or pavement closures
Parking restrictions
Banned turns
Bus lane suspensions
Cost
The applicant must pay a cost, depending on the area in which the work is carried out:
Chiswick area: £1600
All other areas in borough: £1100
What you need to do
In most cases you will need to organise a site meeting withn ourselves, London Buses and traffic police. We advise this meeting takes place before the TTMO application form is submitted. If the work affects a bus route, London Buses must approve the diversion plan and start and end dates will be required.
After this, complete an application form, available to download from the right.
We must receive your application at least six weeks before the restriction is required. If less than six weeks notice is given then the restriction may have to be delayed.
Certain roads in Hounslow fall under the jurisdiction of Transport for London: A4 Great West Road; A205 Kew Bridge Road and Chiswick High Road; A30 Great South West Road; A312 The Parkway, The Causeway, Faggs Road, Harlington Road West, Harlington Road East, Uxbridge Road and Hampton Road West
If the work affects one of these roads then a minimum of ten weeks is required to allow for consultation with Transport for London.
Payment for the TTMO must be sent with the completed application form. Cheques should be made payable to “London Borough of Hounslow” for either £1600 for works in the Chiswick area or £1100 for other parts of the borough.
You should also submit your proposed diversion route (where applicable), and the associated signing schedule, for our approval. These should be accompanied with a plan to an appropriate scale.
If the work requires parking bays to be suspended to facilitate the works, you will need to liaise with our parking department for bay suspensions and associated fees: parking@hounslow.gov.uk.
We will check the application, the traffic management plan and the suitability of any proposed diversion routes and signing schedule. Agreement to the requested restriction will depend on known traffic conditions and any other programmed works.
We will comply with all statutory requirements such as giving public notice, display of street notices, and statutory consultation.
You must erect advance warning signs on-site advising people of the planned date and duration of the restriction. These must be erected on-site at least seven days in advance of any restriction coming into operation.
If required by us, you must carry out letter drops to relevant households and businesses in the locality advising them of the proposed restriction.
The restriction and any associated diversion must be signed.
The restriction must take place on the date given on the application. If this is not the case then the signs on site must be amended accordingly.
If the restriction is delayed by more than five days, you may be required to carry out a further letter drop.
On completion of the work, you must make sure that all temporary signs are removed from the road.
