What is the Unitary Development Plan (UDP)?
The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) is a long-term strategic plan for land and building use, new developments and conservation within the London Borough of Hounslow.
Acting as a legal framework for future planning decisions, the UDP contains a wide range of policies on housing, the environment, transport, leisure, economic, retail and community uses. Along with other council strategies the UDP aims to improve and create a better borough for those who live, work and visit.
Since 2004, the planning system has changed and the UDP is being replaced by a Local Development Framework (LDF) for the borough, which comprises several different documents. Preparing and updating the UDP is a legal requirement and must reflect government guidance and the Mayor of London’s citywide strategic planning guidance. Until it is completely replaced by the LDF, the UDP will be updated as each new LDF document is adopted. You should refer to both the UDP, and the LDF documents for up to date policy.
Planning permissions are made in accordance with the policies set out in the UDP and the LDF.
The UDP is made up of 2 written parts (part I and part II) and a proposals map.
Part 1 gives the strategic overview and the overall aim of the UDP. The description of the general policies provides an outline for the more detailed policies in Part 2.
Part 2 is split into topic chapters covering guidance on sustainable development and regeneration, implementation, natural and built environment, waterways, environmental protection, housing, community and leisure facilities, shopping and transport. The proposals schedule gives specific planning guidance for a variety of development sites across the borough.
The proposals map shows areas covered by certain part 2 policies and the proposals schedule, giving UDP or LDF references where relevant. The proposals map shows major development sites and where we expect change to occur within the lifetime of the plan, areas designated in policy, proposal sites and transport routes.
Where can I view the UDP?
The Adopted UDP 2003 and proposals maps are available for viewing at the Civic Centre and in local libraries.
How do I check the UDP designation of a site?
For information about a particular site within Hounslow please contact us with the site address. We will be able to advise you what the UDP designation is (if there is one ) and of any planning constraints on a site.
What other documents are produced?
Along with the UDP, we produces a number of documents concerning land use planning in the borough. These include supplementary planning guidance (SPGs), sustainability appraisals and town centre action plans.
