Gunnersbury Park

English Heritage recognises Gunnersbury Park as one of the most important parks in the country.

Gunnersbury is jointly run by Ealing and Hounslow councils, who formed the Gunnersbury Park Regeneration Board to consider the best way to protect the park for future generations.

The board is currently made up of local councillors from both Hounslow and Ealing.

English Heritage, the government’s adviser on the historic environment, has registered Gunnersbury as Grade 2* meaning it is in the top 30 per cent of registered parks in the country. There are also 21 registered buildings and structures on the site some of them within the top 10 per cent of the register.

English Heritage has also named Gunnersbury within the top 12 ‘at risk’ properties in England due to the large amount of investment needed to stabilise and ultimately repair these important buildings.

Gunnersbury Park, like many local authority-owned parks, has suffered as pressure on council budgets diverts funds away from park maintenance.

What are we going to do about it?

Recently a conservation management plan (CMP), commissioned to protect the heritage, suggested various options in the future management of Gunnersbury.

The CMP will help us look after the heritage of Gunnersbury Park. It explains why this matters to people and sets out what we can do to look after it.

The CMP describes features of the park and why these features are important and starts to consider options as to how they can be retained

  • to halt the loss of heritage from Gunnersbury Park

  • to shape and influence any repairs and renovations

  • to give guidance to any new project that may be considered.

Once these options are formed into real proposals to reverse the decline the CMP would be used to support grant applications to organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund.
