Hello and welcome,
I am Councillor Nisar Malik, Mayor of the London Borough Hounslow.
As Mayor, I am the ‘first citizen’ of the borough. Elected by my fellow councillors, I am serving one year in office until May 2016.
My role is largely ceremonial. It includes chairing the formal monthly meeting of all councillors (known as Borough Council meetings); attending citizenship ceremonies; hosting civic events such as the Remembrance Day Service every November; and signing some of the council’s official legal documents.
A big part of my role – and the bit I like most – is meeting lots of different people. The Mayor gets invited to all sorts of community events throughout the year and I am looking forward to greeting as many as I can.
I feel very privileged to be Mayor, not just because of the position I hold but because I am also the borough’s first Muslim Mayor.
I am determined to make it a busy year and will be putting my heart and soul into the role over the coming months, not only in helping to raise money for my chosen charities but in achieving my mission.
My aim is to bring young and old people together.
One of the most striking differences I learnt about British culture after arriving in Hounslow from Pakistan was the way older people lived separately from their families.
Young people can learn a lot from the older generation who have given their life to their country.
And the young people can cheer up older people and teach them new technology such as Facebook and Twitter.
I want to do all I can to help bridge that inter-generational gap and bring people together.
I also want to bring together the many religions and faiths we have in Hounslow, and celebrate what we have in common. We should all meet and talk to each other, so we can celebrate our humanity together
While being Mayor is a great honour for me personally, it is also an opportunity to promote and support two worthy causes that play a big part in bringing people together – Hounslow Toy Library and Contact The Elderly.
They both do wonderful work and run by very passionate and committed people, including many volunteers. I shall be doing all I can to make sure as many people as possible get to hear about what they do and the people they help.
Please come back to my web pages regularly so you can see what I have been up to. You may even see your picture in my photo gallery!

Let’s join together in unity and help each other live life to the full.
