The term community engagement is used everywhere in the world of local government, but it can often be used to mean a lot of different things.
Put simply, community engagement is the process of involving people in decisions that affect them. This can mean involving communities in the planning, development and management of services, or, it may be about tackling the problems of a particular neighbourhood, such as crime or lack of play facilities for children.
I believe that engaging with the community is vitally important for Hounslow Council.
People who live or work in the borough should have the right to influence and shape the future of their community. This will create a greater sense of community spirit, belonging and pride.
People who live in Hounslow are best placed to tell organisations, like their council, what issues affect them and what is needed to improve their quality of life. Surely better decisions will be made with the input of those whose lives they affect? Using the knowledge of members of a community and treating them as experts can always improve the way we do things.
In the latest edition of Hounslow Matters you will find a readers survey. Please do take this opportunity to tell us what you think about your magazine.
In addition, we are introducing two new features. A letters page, so that you can share your views with other residents, and an ‘ask the exec’ feature, where you can put your questions directly to the councillor who is responsible for the services that matter to you. I’ll be first in the hot seat, so make sure you get your questions submitted to see them in print in the June edition.
The London Borough of Hounslow is committed to people in Hounslow having a greater say in how local services are planned and delivered. It is only by listening to the experiences and ideas of the people who live in these communities that we can find the solutions which will make a lasting difference.
Cllr Peter Thompson
Leader
London Borough of Hounslow
