Fly tipping is the illegal deposit of any waste onto land i.e. waste dumped or tipped in a place with no licence to accept it.
Anyone fly tipping waste is committing a serious offence. Fines are up to £20,000
It is also an offence to allow fly tipping on your land
Where fly tipping involves use of a vehicle, the driver and/or the person in control of the vehicle can be prosecuted
The police have powers to seize vehicles used for fly tipping
We are trained in the detection and enforcement of these offences
Report fly tipping
If you witness or are the victim of fly tipping on private property, report full details to the Environment Agency’s free hotline number 0800 807060.
Check how any people who come to work at your home intend to dispose of the waste (e.g. plumbers, builders, house clearance, and landscape gardeners). Is it going to a licensed site for safe, legal disposal?
If you witness a fly tipping incident on a public road or other public area complete a simple e-form available on the right.
Our response
We will visit the scene to establish if it is our responsibility to remove the rubbish, assess the quantity of rubbish and if we are responsible, arrange for removal. We will also look for evidence, with a view to prosecuting offenders.
If the rubbish is deposited on private property it will be the responsibility of the landowner to remove it. Although under certain circumstances we may be prepared to assist with providing a skip to assist a clearance by the resident.
We will normally remove fly tipped refuse within 24 hours although large quantities or problematic refuse e.g. contaminated rubbish, may require specialist removal.
