Supplementary Planning Guidance may take a number of forms including guidelines, strategies and other additional guidance consistent with the policies within the UDP, as well as Regional and National Planning Guidance.
SPG’s do not carry the same weight as UDP policies with regard to the application of Section 54A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, but they nevertheless may be taken into account as a material consideration.

Residential Extension Guidelines 2003
The purpose of these Guidelines is to provide clear advice to our customers on what the Council consider to be acceptable forms of extension to residential properties. These Guidelines expand on the (UDP) Unitary Development Plan policies and explain the many types of residential extension that can be built. In most cases, drawings show both good and bad examples of the extension type. The acceptability of any extension will of course depend on both its size, design and position and the size, type and age of your and nearby houses. (download (
PDF Help, size 2217kb))
For further information and contact details, see ‘Introduction’ within the Guidelines.

Sustainability Checklist 2003
The sustainability checklist is intended to help developers consider the potential effects of their proposal and encourage implementation of measures, which ensure that adverse effects are minimised (download (
Microsoft Word, size 80kb)).
The checklist should be completed for all planning applications involving: multiple dwellings, industrial, leisure, entertainment, commercial, retail, warehousing and transport infrastructure proposals. You are not required to complete the checklist for household extensions, shop fronts, telecommunications, trees, advertisements and lawful use applications.
The checklist is Supplementary Planning Guidance to the Unitary Development Plan and thereby constitutes a material planning consideration for development control.
Please return the completed checklist with your planning application to:
