Environmental impact of driving to school

Global warming is rarely out of the news these days. Road traffic accounts for around a fifth of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions. By reducing how much we use the car we can all do our bit to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we produce, and help to protect the environment.

Problems such as global warming often seem too big and too far away to really do anything about, but traffic pollution also has a devastating affect on the local environment as well.

Lots of car engines running around schools means that these can be some of the most polluted places in the borough. Children spending time in this environment are five times more likely to develop diseases such as asthma, compared to those growing up in less polluted areas.

A report by the Environment Transport Trust found that passengers in cars stuck in traffic breathe in greater amounts of pollution that those who were outside in the open air.
