School travel planning

School Travel Planning (STP) is a process of looking at all the problems caused by travel to and from schools during the day, and then putting together a package of solutions to help reduce the negative effects of this daily flow of pupils, staff and parents.

Solutions put forward in travel plans should concentrate on making the journey to school more sustainable (less polluting and damaging to the environment), healthier (using active transport methods such as walking or cycling which provide children with valuable exercise) and safer for all children and adults.

Remember – by completing a plan the school is eligible for a capital grant for onsite improvements (around £5000 for a typical primary school and £10,000 for a secondary).  We can also use the plan to bid for larger scale engineering works in the vicinity of the school, for example traffic calming, new crossings, cycle routes etc.

It is proposed that all of Hounslow’s schools, including independents, will have a travel plan in place by 2009.

All the information you need to complete your plan is available through the Hounslow School Travel Plan website: www.hounslowstp.org.uk.

Also available on this website is our sustainable school travel strategy, which sets out how we will work with partners to overcome the barriers to the uptake of sustainable travel to and from school. A parents' summary of this strategy is available to download from this page.
