Dropped kerbs

How do I apply for a dropped kerb (vehicle crossover)?

First, you need to establish if planning permission is required. Permission will be needed if your dropped kerb is:
  • on certain roads in the borough
  • a flat, maisonette or multiple occupancy home
  • a listed building or in a conservation area
If planning permission is required then you will need to apply to the planning department. Please complete the following forms and return them to planning with a fee of £135.
Please wait until approval has been given from planning before submitting an application to the highways team.

If planning permission is not required

Complete a standard application form and return it to the highways team with a cheque for the inspection fee, currently £61.
When we receive this we'll send out an engineer to carry out a site inspection, usually within 10 working days. If you live in an area where crossovers are reported to committee this will be presented at the next available area committee meeting.
Once your dropped kerb request has been approved we will send you a written quote. If you decide to progress with your application, as soon as we receive your payment you will have 3 months to decide to take it further.

Costs

Every dropped kerb is priced individually based on the measurements required, the depth of pavement and the type of materials used.
The current £61 inspection fee you pay on application is neither refundable nor deductible. It is a one-off fee that covers the cost of an engineer attending site, putting together the estimate, processing the paperwork and, where necessary, preparing committee reports and attending meetings.

Other possible costs

You will also have to pay for the costs of moving anything that may be blocking your new access. This includes:
  • lamp posts
  • gas, electricity or water boxes
  • parking bays or restrictions.

Residents driving over pavements without a dropped kerb

If someone on your street has not installed a dropped kerb please report this to us. We will send out an inspector to investigate. We will contact the resident where they will have one of two choices:
  • apply to us for a properly constructed dropped kerb or
  • return written confirmation that they will no longer cross the pavement.
If neither of these options is taken we will take action.
