Roads - bridges

We are responsible for any highway bridges we own. These bridges should be inspected regularly and a programme of maintenance work drawn up to ensure their safety.

There are also other bridge owners, the largest of these being:

  • Highways Agency (trunk roads and motorways)

  • Railtrack (railways)

  • Environment Agency (main rivers)

  • British Waterways Board (canals)

We are responsibile for maintaining 63 bridges of which 28 are road bridges, 26 footbridges, 3 subways, 3 culverts and 3 highway retaining walls so far identified as highway retaining structures.

We are also responsibile for maintaining surface access across 16 Railtrack bridges, 6 London Underground bridges and 8 Railtrack footbridges.

Bridges form a key part of the highway system by virtue of their strategic location and because the consequences of their failure on the highway network. Inspections are a essential part of the bridge maintenance and are carried out systematically at regular intervals to foresee and resolve any problems before they arise to enhance public safety and longer economic life of the bridges.
