Safer Steps explained
The Safer Steps scheme is available to children Year 1 to Year 4 in all the schools in Hounslow. The school decides if they would like us to come into their school to deliver the scheme and what age group will participate.
Volunteers
The scheme relies on adult volunteers who may be parents, grandparents or classroom assistants. All adult volunteers will have to under go a Criminal Records Check. Teachers go out with their class on all occasions.
Volunteers undergo a training session of about 1-1 and half hours, using a road safety handbook, a week before the onset of the course.
Training
The Safer Steps scheme involves taking the children out over four weeks for one hour sessions on to the road side talking about different aspects of road safety. Before the scheme starts we plan a route using roads around the school.
The class teacher allocates one adult for every three children who they will be with for the whole of the scheme.
All adults and children wear high visibility jackets and are encouraged to hold hands at all times. Before the children take part in the scheme a permission form is sent home to parents. If the form is not signed the child will not be able to participate. A parent information pack is also sent home before the start of the scheme outlining the scheme content and to also inform the parents that the training is to make the children aware of their surroundings and is for their future safety. We still recommend that the children are to be supervised by an adult whenever they go out. At the end of the scheme a school assembly is arranged so the children can receive a certificate to say that they have participated in the training.
