Biodiversity Action Plan - background

The Hounslow Biodiversity Action Plan was launched in 2003 by the Hounslow Biodiversity Action Plan Partnership (BAP).

The Hounslow BAP works towards the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of biological resources.

It explains how to protect, conserve and enhance the borough’s wildlife and habitats. It also shows how we can monitor biodiversity by looking at the health of these habitats and the species within them.

Why do we need a Biodiversity Action Plan?

The Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, resulted in four international agreements on environmental issues.

These were:

  • climate change

  • forestry

  • biodiversity

  • a global action plan called 'Agenda 21'

This declaration was updated ten years on at The World Summit for Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg in2002.

As a result, the UK government produced the National BAP and encouraged local authorities to establish their own versions.

The Hounslow BAP was put together by a partnership of organisations. In 2003, the partnership launched the first of its species and habitat action plans, reflecting our priorities for conservation and the involvement of residents and landowners in the borough.

Hounslow Biodiversity Action Plan 2011-2016

Since the launch of the Hounslow BAP in 2003, the Partnership has been working hard to increase the level of biodiversity management across the boroughs SINCs (Sites of Important Nature Conservation.

As a result the numbers of habitats and species identified have increased which have resulted in a range of different conservation measures being implemented to protect and enhance them.
