Checking your homeless status

The law states that you are homeless if you do not have a home where you can live here or abroad. You are also homeless if you have a home but it is not reasonable for you to stay there anymore. You must be able to prove that you are homeless or threatened with homelessness within 28 days.

Proof would be a court order, an official notice to quit from your landlord, or a letter from you friend or family member detailing dates you have stayed with them and the reasons you have to leave.

Letters of evictions from family and friends will be verified by carrying out home visits, making extensive enquiries with the host and checking the details with a credit agency (Experian) and the Land Registry. We do not take any information given at face value and are required by law to check the facts and information provided to us by the applicant.

We are fully aware that we are not expected to make CID type enquires on homeless applications. However, we are certainly expected to protect public funds.
