Health trainers

Does your day-to-day work bring you into regular contact with individuals and/or communities that need support in the London Borough of Hounslow?

Are you involved with a local community/voluntary group within the borough? If yes, then you could become part of the Hounslow health trainers project.

What are health trainers?

  • Health trainers have a paid or voluntary role within the community and receive training in a number of key health areas to ensure a broad base of health awareness

  • Following training, they are are encouraged to offer health advice and support in a group and/or individual setting and provide links to further specialised local health advice and support

  • Current Hounslow health trainers are people working and / or volunteering with local communities with the aim of communicating consistent messages about healthy lifestyles

Locally health trainers have come from a range of backgrounds ranging from youth workers, fitness instructors, and community development officers to smoking cessation facilitators ,refugee workers and volunteer community group leaders. All have the common role of working with and alongside local people or groups in the borough, either through their work or voluntary activity.

What are the benefits of becoming a Hounslow health trainer?

You will receive free local training to build your knowledge of health messages, information, resources and services, which you can use in your day-to-day work and/or community groups to contribute to improving the health of local communities in Hounslow. The key health topics include:

  • Healthy eating

  • Physical activity

  • Emotional health and wellbeing

  • Sexual health

  • Drugs, alcohol and smoking

  • Behaviour change

Upon completion of this core training, you will have access to:

  • further training opportunities in health topics that particularly interest you.

  • Free regular newsletters and access to health trainer support events.

  • access to the small grants scheme to enable you to undertake health related projects with the communities you have contact with.

  • Ongoing support in developing health projects and giving health advice.

  • Advice and support to help you progress to become accredited NHS health trainer.

How to become a Hounslow health trainer

If you hope to use the training within your current role either as an employee, ensure that:

  • you discuss the information pack with your manager

  • they support your application and understand the benefits it will bring to your current role

  • they will support you in undertaking the core training below and incorporating it into your current role

If you hope to use the training to work with a community/voluntary group you are part of ensure that there will be opportunities to use the training with your organisation or group.

After you've complete the application form we will contact you to arrange a time convenient to you where you can meet us and ask any further questions you may have about the project.

Once your application has been confirmed you will be given the dates of the next available four day training course.
