Hounslow Council

Fostering application process

Becoming a foster carer takes around 4-6 months, during which time we will need to carry out various checks and take up references.

Step 1
Call in at one of our monthly information sessions or call us on 0800 731 8558 to express your interest in fostering.  We will need to have some background information from you such as your name and address, who lives in your house etc.  We will then send you an information pack.

Step 2
The next stage is to have a recruitment social worker visit you at home.  This will give you the opportunity to discuss fostering in more detail. We will also use this time to consider how fostering will impact on your family and domestic circumstances.

Step 3
You may then be invited to attend the preparation group training, where you will learn about what is involved in fostering.  You will meet staff members as well as foster carers and young people who can tell you about their own personal experiences of fostering.

If its decided to proceed with your assessment a social worker will be allocated to carry out a series of assessment visits to you and your family.  The social worker will also carry out back ground checks, for example Police and medical checks and take up personal references.

Step 4
When your assessment is completed, it will be presented to our fostering panel for approval.  If the panel are satisfied that everything is in order then you will be approved as a foster carer.  You will then be allocated a social worker to provide you with all the ongoing advice, guidance and support you need.

For more information  why not give us a call for a friendly chat.  You can call us on 0800 731 8558 between 9am and 5pm or leave a message and someone will get back to you.
