Getting hold of equipment to help you move around your home, getting in and out of your chair or simply helping you manage preparing food in the kitchen is now much easier.
Simple aids to daily living such as eating and drinking utensils, grab rails and raised toilet seats are now available on permanent loan redeemable scheme via prescription from your local chemist, shop or mobility store free of charge to you. This national scheme is called Transforming Community Equipment Service (TCES).
Larger equipment for example hoists and adjustable beds will be available on loan and organised through your local council and health partnership.
One stop service to help, advice, assessment and equipment
Community equipment helps millions of people each year live more independently at home.
Hounslow Council in partnership with NHS Hounslow provides a one stop advice and information service for equipment and simple aids.
In discussion with you, trained assessors will identify the difficulties you are experiencing, establish from you what you want to achieve and recommend the best equipment which suits your needs. You will then be given a list of accredited retailers in your area.
If you are eligible for state-funded equipment, you will be given a prescription, instead of waiting for the equipment to be delivered to your home. If you are not eligible or prefer to buy your own equipment, you will be given information about what is suitable for your needs and told where you can buy it. Either way you will be able to choose from a range of products that suit you best.
Topping up on your prescription
If you are eligible for a prescription, visit the retailer and top up by choosing something that is more expensive than the basic item on the prescription, for example a brass rail instead of a plain white one.
