Hounslow Council

Travel buddy service

The travel buddy service trains and supports people with a learning disability to feel confident about travelling on their own on public transport.

We employ six fully trained travel buddies who have learning disabilities themselves to shadow and support others with the same disability. The Travel Buddy service has therefore been able to create meaningful paid employment and social activities for these individuals and as such, increase independence and feel part of the wider community.

Our service

We provide one to one travel support for individuals who want to be able to use public transport to travel around the borough.

We also provide a group buddy service for those living in the same area and travelling to the same destination.

We are also able to be flexible recognising that people have very individual needs. This may mean providing some one-off help to begin with, followed up by more continuous support at a later date.

We always encourage individuals with a learning disability to develop their independence and confidence to travel on their own to meet friends and family, so that they feel less isolated and more part of the community within which they live.

If you are interested in being part of this project you need to be:

  • Aged 16 or over and living within the London Borough of Hounslow

  • Have a learning disability

  • Be aiming to increase and show a commitment to developing your independent travelling skills.

  • Be willing and able to travel using public transport

  • Be physically able to walk short distances

  • Be known to a professional who is able to provide information on your disability.
