Motability is a scheme that allows residents receiving the Higher Rate Mobility component of the Disabled Living Allowance to use their allowance towards the purchase of a car.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for any of the Motability schemes you must be receiving one of the following benefits:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance
·War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
Although you should be receiving the allowance for the full length of the agreement, you may still be eligible if you will only receive the allowance for part of the agreement. You can also apply to purchase a car if you have a child over the age of three if they receive the mobility allowance.
Once you have chosen which scheme you wish to join, you then agree to pay over all, or part, of your allowance to Motability Operations or route2mobility, depending on your choice of car/wheelchair, for the duration of the contract hire, or hire purchase, agreement.

How do I apply?
You must first choose a model of car and visit a motability-accredited dealer to test drive a car. The dealer will ask you to fill out a suitability questionnaire and will expect you to bring with you:
Your award entitlement notice;
Your driving licence (for cars only);
Proof of address e.g. recent utility bill;
Driving licences for other named drivers - who must also sign the proposed drivers' declaration on the application form (for cars on the Contract Hire Scheme only); and,
Details of any previous accidents and driving convictions that you, or your named drivers, may have (for cars on the Contract Hire Scheme only)

How much does it cost?
Motability produces a price guide that is updated every month, to take into account current car prices and fleet management costs. It also provides an indication of the amount of the allowance required to lease a new car, or whether the whole of the allowance is needed. It also details any advance payment that may be required.
