We acknowledge that people come from a varied range of backgrounds with unique life experiences and life styles. It is exactly this diversity of families that we are looking for:
We will consider you if you are:
Single, married or living with a partner - We will be talking to you about your past and present relationships and the strengths and weaknesses of these
Gay or Lesbian - As an couple you can make a joint adoption application
A parent already - Your children may still be living at home or have moved away
Childless - We would expect you to have completed all investigations and treatment for infertility at least one year prior to the start of an assessment and to be ready to proceed with adoption
In employment or receiving benefits - You may be in employment or on benefits
A home owner or rent your own home - You will need to be in permanent accommodation that is suitable for the placement of a child
A resident in the UK - You must be legally domiciled in the UK
Over the age of 21 - We do not have an upper age limit, but would look at the likelihood of you surviving and retaining sufficient energy to meet a child’s needs through all the years of the child’s dependence.
Any cultural, racial and linguistic background - We need families from a diverse range of backgrounds and will use interpreters if you prefer to communicate in a language other than English
Or are not practising any religion - The children for whom we need families are from a wide range of backgrounds. You may or may not practice your religion
In reasonably good health - We do not discriminate against applicants on the basis of smoking habits, weight or other health issues. However we would talk to you about how such factors may affect your ability to care for children and how children in your household may be affected. We would take advice from the Local Authority Medical Adviser on such issues.
