Carer assessment

We recognise that carers have needs of their own, as well as an interest in the needs of the person whom they care for. We believe that people should have some choice about whether, and how far, they take on (or continue) the role of carer.

This can be a complex issue, as caring usually takes place within a close relationship and choice about caring is often limited by lack of satisfactory alternatives.

Why have an assessment?

There may be services we can provide that give you short breaks from caring. You will need to have an assessment to see if you qualify.

An assessment also helps us to understand your needs as a carer and provide better services in the future.

How do I know if I'm entitled to an assessment?

If you provide or intend to provide regular and substantial care, you are entitled to an assessment.

If the person you care for refuses an assessment for him or herself, you are still entitled to an assessment for your needs.

For more information on getting a carer’s assessment for yourself, contact the adult access team, see right of this page.
