Care and repair

Care and Repair offers an advisory and support service to help disabled and older owner-occupiers (and some private sector tenants) repair, improve and adapt their homes, provided they are a resident in the London Borough of Hounslow and meet one of the following criteria:

  • you are over 70 years old

  • have a disability or severe health problems

  • you are from a single parent family with a disabled child.

Our aim is to smooth the stress and disruption of carrying out large or small repairs, improvements or adaptations to your home by offering confidential advice, support and expertise.

We can :

  • advise you what repairs and improvements are necessary

  • obtain quotations from builders

  • oversee the works until they are completed

  • help you when arranging works covered by insurance claims.

We can also help you by:

  • checking your benefit entitlement and help you to apply for any types of benefits for which you might qualify

  • helping you get in touch with local services (e.g. Age UK, Occupational Therapists, Home Care)

  • refering you on to energy efficiency schemes to make your home warmer and more energy efficient

  • carrying out home safety checks and  offer falls prevention advice.

How does the service work?

We will visit you in your home to discuss the works you are considering. We will inspect your property and report back to you with our suggestions. We will also prepare specifications of work relating to the jobs you require and give you an indication as to how much the works might cost. If the cost worries you, we may be able to help you apply for grants/financial assistance or loans (if available). We can also obtain quotations from contractors for you. Once the works have started, we will oversee them until they are completed.

We will also help you to deal with any disruption or problems that arise while the works have started. A final inspection to ensure satisfactory standards of workmanship is carried out. All advice given, including the initial visit, is free. If you decide to carry out work with our help, a fee based on the cost of works will be charged. The amount to be charged will be fully discussed with you before you are committed in any way.

Please remember that our advice is free and you do not have to proceed, if you feel you do not want to.
