Can I sponsor the planting of a new or replacement street tree?
We are comitted to improving the local environment for the benefit of all who live and work in the borough. We are trying to develop a variety of partnership proposals with businesses and local residents, where we can tackle the task of new or replacement street tree planting together. This scheme includes those who wish to plant a memorial tree.
Cost
The cost of supplying one young tree on the roadside is £400, which includes ongoing maintenance.
Location
We will consider the specific locations and species for tree planting as requested by the sponsor and we will try to meet the requirements. However, it is not always possible to plant trees in suggested locations. We can provide further advice on this. We also advise you to discuss the location with your neighbours.
Replacement
The sponsorship scheme does allow for replacement of a tree, should it die as a result of being of poor stock. Unfortunately in the event of vandalism we cannot cover the replacement costs.
Maintenance
We will monitor the tree and carry out routine maintenance of the tree for 3 years to ensure its safety and establishment, after which time the tree will be included within our routine street tree maintenance programme.
We would expect the sponsor to assist with routine watering of the tree until it is established, without endangering the safety of the public and themselves. An irrigation tube may be provided to assist with this activity. Remember, for a tree to thrive it will require 10-20 litres of water every 1-2 weeks during spring and summer.
Legal ownership
Once planted, the legal ownership of the tree will remain with us.
