We operate a planned programme for maintaining street trees. We have more than 11,000 street trees that are maintained on an ongoing basis. Over the past 2 years over 1000 additional trees have been planted across the borough. We want to increase our tree stock as they will shade our streets and mitigate increases in tepmeratures due to climate change.
Benefits
Trees enhance the local environment and provide numerous benefits including:
adding colour to the urban environment
helping to lower dust and noise levels
providing habitats for a range of wildlife
reducing pollutant gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide
potentially increasing property prices
moderating temperature
providing a sense of wellbeing
Our policy is not to remove healthy trees. Trees are only removed when they are dead, dying or dangerous. A tree will only be removed when absolutely necessary. We will try to replace removed trees, however this is not always possible. If we cannot replant we will fill in the tree pit as soon as possible.
