Residents

As well as reporting graffiti, there are lots of other ways you can help prevent graffiti ruining the look of an area.

Prevention

There are several physical things that can be done to discourage taggers to prevent graffiti on your property.

These are:

  • Ongoing upkeep and rapid removal. Studies show that repeated rapid removal lowers the rate of reoccurrence.

  • Incorporate shrubs, thorny plants, and climbers to restrict vandal access.

  • Add or improve lighting around the building to promote natural surveillance.

  • For high level graffiti make sure that the access to the roof is restricted to authorised people only and prevent climbing the walls from yours and any neighbour's roof using anti climb paint and physical barriers.

  • Work with other neighbours to organise and contribute to a “paint bank.” Paints, rollers, brushes, and other equipment from the bank are “borrowed” as needed. Ensure safe and environmentally appropriate storage of paint.

  • Employ graffiti-resistant materials or coatings on a wall that’s constantly hit with graffiti.

Clean ups

Why not get together with your neighbours and organise ‘a paint it out’ party to cover up large areas covered in graffiti? This way you can share the work, and make a visible impact if an area is seriously blighted by graffiti.

The community environment team might be able to help, so email us at streetcare@hounslow.gov.uk to see what they can do.

You could organise ‘spot-squads’ to report multiple cases of graffiti in your area.
