Waste reduction tips - at home

Junk mail

To reduce the amount of unsolicited junk mail that you receive:

  • call the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) on 0845 7034599

  • visitthe Mailing Preference Service website

  • place a "no junk mail"  sticker on your letterbox. Contact us to get one or pick one up from a local event.

To stop unaddressed leaflets or letters delivered by Royal Mail:

  • email: optout@royalmail.com

  • call: 08457 950950 - select option 5

Royal Mail is legally obliged to deliver mail addressed to the occupier and a full address. They will send you a form to sign in response, ensuring you understand that this is what you want and that you are the resident of the property.

When completing forms, always tick the box requesting no further correspondence, or write to the company. Also, tick the box on the council's annual electoral registration form to opt out of the edited version of the electoral register, companies can buy this version for marketing purposes.

Write to or call companies and organisations you have dealt with in the past to ask to be removed from their databases.

Reuse any envelopes by sticking a label over the address and then write the new address.  You can purchase these from places like WWF or Friends of the Earth or request a sheet of 8 from us.

Furniture

If you have any good quality furniture that you no longer require, donate them to local charities or furniture projects. Furniture is collected from your property, and then sold at a very reduced rate to people on low incomes who wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. Please call:

  • Hounslow Furniture Recycling Project on 020 8814 2225

  • Acton Furniture Project on 020 8896 1248

  • Richmond Furniture Scheme on 020 8755 4665

The Hounslow Furniture Recycling Project (HFRP) are based at Carnegie Hall on Northcote Avenue in Isleworth and stock a wide variety of household furniture and appliances. Items include chairs, settees, tables, beds and wardrobes; White Goods including fridges, freezers and cookers; along with household electrical items such as TV's, videos and stereos.

Those who claim Income Support, Housing Credit or Working Tax Credit may obtain a referral to make use of the services offered by HFRP. Referral forms may be obtained from Social Services, the London Borough of Hounslow Homeless Persons Unit, local charities and church welfare groups.

If you wish to donate any reusable household items please call 020 8814 2225, and a representative will arrange for a collection. All items will be inspected before collection and HFRP reserve the right not to take items that are clearly in poor condition or, in the case of upholstered furniture, items that were manufactured before 1997.

Brita water filters

BRITA has an in store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores such as Robert Dyas, Argos and Cargo. Other major retailer collection points will be following soon.

The BRITA branded bins will be located next to the existing water filter category in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.

For further information regarding this scheme please contact the BRITACare department on 0844 742 4800 or log onto their website.
