Real nappy scheme

Brand new real nappy incentive starts soon

Thinking of using washable nappies?

Eight million disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every DAY costing councils hundreds of thousands of pounds to dispose of.

One child may wear more than 4000 nappies before potty training with 90% ending up in landfill, where they take so long to break down they could still be around when your great, great grandchildren are born.

Washable nappies are not like old fashioned towelling nappies; they fasten easily with poppers or velcro and are cute and stylish to keep your baby looking its best.

As part of this year's Real Nappy Week (16 - 20 April), we are launching a brand new incentive scheme for parents wanting to try washable nappies.

As there are many different types of washable nappies and more brands than can be counted on 10 tiny fingers or toes our new incentive scheme offers a taster pack worth over £50, so you can try washable nappies at home.

The one size (birth to potty) pocket nappy we have chosen for the pack is both easy to use and easy to care for and a local nappy guru is on hand to give you more information about using these nappies including washing and drying tips.

The pack contains

  • 3 x smartipants birth to potty pocket nappies

  • 3 x bamboo boosters

  • A roll of flushable liners

  • A nappy wet bag

The smartipants nappy is:

  • easy to use

  • quick drying (no need to tumble dry)

  • versatile (you can add more absorbency if needed)

  • hard wearing (will last 3 children if looked after)

  • one size (can be used from birth to potty)

The value of real nappies

  • 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK

  • Nappies make up 4% of the total waste collected by councils

  • If you are a household with a baby, nappies can be up to 50% of your weekly rubbish

  • 90% of disposables end up in landfill sites

  • Some parts of the nappies are estimated to take up to 500 years to decompose

  • Parts that do degrade produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming

  • Even if you only use real nappies some of the time, you are still helping the environment

  • The Real Nappy Association has calculated that savings from using real nappies for a first child alone can amount to £600

  • Most can be used for several children, meaning even greater savings
