Plastic cannot currently be collected from the kerbside for recycling.
There are various sites around the borough where you can take mixed household plastic for recycling. There are about 50 different groups of plastics with hundreds of different varieties. These are usually split into 1 of 7 categories and can often be identified by a number on the bottom of the packaging.
The sites in Hounslow take most household plastic packaging. Please wash and squash your plastics.
Three quarters of plastic packaging placed in the banks is recycled into a raw material to be used again for manufacturing. The remaining 25% is used for making RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) pellets.
When out shopping try to buy items with reduced amounts of plastic packaging or items made from recycled plastic.
Plastic suitable for recycling:
bottles - washing-up liquids, fabric softener and detergents, toiletries such as shampoo and bubble bath, fizzy drinks, mineral water, squash, juice and milk
food containers - yogurt pots, margarine tubs, fruit and vegetable punnets, ready meal and cooked meat trays
wrapping - crisp packets, cling film, frozen food packets, chocolate and biscuit wrappers and cellophane
Other plastics - lids, utensils, disposable cups, toothpaste tubes, carrier bags and bin liners
From Feburary 2009, as part of the new recycling service, a kerbside recycling service for mixed plastics will be introduced.
