If you have been doing some gardening you can dispose of the waste in various ways. You could compost your garden waste at home using a free compost bin available from the council or have it collected using the free garden waste collection service.
Garden waste cannot be put out for the normal black sack refuse collection
Garden waste must be put in your reusable Hounslow Council green garden waste sack
We will continue to collect garden waste in the old biodegradable sacks that you may still have
Sacks are collected from the edge of your property on alternate weeks, on the same day as your other recycling - refer to your collection calendar for specific collection days
Each household has been given two green bags for their garden waste which should be should be adequate for the majority of households.
We will make a limited number of additional sacks available per household, based on the size of garden, at a one off cost of £5 per sack. Please contact us if you would like to order one.
Larger quantities of garden waste can be taken to Space Waye Reuse and Recycling centre.
Disposing of your garden waste
Sacks should be left out before 7am on the morning of collection or as late as possible the night before.
It is your responsibility to lawfully dispose of your garden waste. It is very important to separate garden waste. If it decomposes in a landfill site it produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming.
All garden waste material is taken to Didcot in Oxfordshire to be composted. This compost can then be purchased from Space Waye Reuse and Recycling Centre. A 70-litre bag currently costs £2 and there is no limit as to how many bags you can purchase.
Please note that we do not accept the following in the garden waste collection service:
Japanese knotweed: contact us for help with dealing with this
Fallen fruit: this is classified as food waste and cannot be accepted for composting with garden waste. Please dispose of in your black rubbish sacks, or in your home compost bin
Horse chestnut leaves
Horse chestnut trees in this area may have been affected by the leaf miner moth. We therefore recommend that the leaves from horse chestnut trees are not home composted but are disposed of through the green garden waste collection service. Home composting does not reach a high enough temperature to destroy the moth pupae and will allow the infection to continue to spread next year. There is no health risk associated with these moths, and in the short term this is primarily a visual problem and should not cause dieback to the trees.
